Isla Montuosa – What Makes it a Legendary Panama Fishing Spot

Where is Isla Montuosa?

Isla Montuosa is a remote island located in Panama’s Pacific ocean, near the Gulf of Chiriqui. It is the furthest island from the Panamanian coast, located 80km or 50 miles offshore. Isla Montuosa was designated in 2008 by Panamanian authorities as a wildlife refuge due to the unique flora and fauna the island boasts, and has since been part of the Coiba National Marine Park.

What makes Isla Montuosa a Legendary Fishing Spot?

Sportfishing around Montuosa Island is widely regarded as some of the most exhilarating and productive in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Its remote location, far from heavy commercial pressure and coastal development, has allowed fish populations to thrive in remarkable numbers. The waters here are deep, nutrient-rich, and influenced by strong ocean currents that push baitfish into concentrated areas — creating the perfect feeding grounds for large pelagic predators. For serious anglers, Montuosa isn’t just another fishing stop; it’s considered a bucket-list destination.

One of the biggest reasons for its reputation is its proximity to Hannibal Bank, an underwater seamount that rises dramatically from the ocean floor. This structure acts like a magnet for big game species. Anglers regularly target black marlin, blue marlin, and sailfish, especially during peak seasons when billfish activity can be intense. Yellowfin tuna are another major draw — often schooling in impressive numbers and sometimes reaching trophy sizes well over 100 pounds. Dorado (mahi-mahi) and wahoo add to the action, making it possible to encounter multiple prized species in a single outing.

Beyond offshore big game fishing, the surrounding reefs and rocky outcroppings offer opportunities for heavy-tackle bottom fishing. Large cubera snapper, amberjack, roosterfish, and other hard-fighting species patrol these structures. This diversity means anglers can mix techniques — trolling, popping, jigging, and live baiting — depending on conditions and personal preference. The combination of offshore pelagics and strong inshore reef species gives Montuosa a rare versatility.

What Fish can you Catch in Isla Montuosa?

Isla Montuosa is popular for its billfish fishing, in particular black and blue marlin. Because the island sits within the protected marine region of Coiba National Park, regulations are in place to help preserve the ecosystem. Many operators practice catch-and-release for billfish and promote responsible fishing methods to maintain the area’s health. This conservation focus is part of why the fishery remains so productive year after year. You can also find large sized yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi or dorado in this spot. The best time to come for marlin is between January and March. Yellowfin tuna can be caught year-round, but if you are after a cow-sized tuna, then come anytime between May and June. Dorado are more abundant between the months of November and February, just after the rainy season in Panama.

If you have no luck in Isla Montuosa, you can always try Hannibal Bank, which is only 13 miles away. Hannibal Bank is a underwater continental shelf area which has contributed towards IGFA world records. It is of the most famous spots for some of the most sought-after pelagics such as yellowfin tuna, marlin, sailfish, dorado and more!
