Hannibal Bank and Isla Montuosa, located in the Gulf of Chiriquí in Panama, have become a popular destination for anglers looking to catch a variety of big game fish, including marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and more.
Located 48 nautical miles from the lodge, this area is one of the most unique fishing grounds in the world. Running five miles long and three miles wide, the banks are characterized by deep water. They’re a beneficiary of the Humboldt Current that moves an abundance of plankton biomass to the surface. The unique terrain and currents push both nutrients and oxygen to the surface in far greater quantities than normal ecosystems. Consequently, these nutrients attract an abundance of baitfish and make for an exceptional sport fishing region, delivering trophy-sized yellowfin tuna and marlin. For this reason, it has become one of the most popular deep sea fishing Panama locations.
Fishing Calendar
Black Marlin are resident in our waters year round however most prolific in the winter months. Blue Marlin, as well as the acrobatic Sailfish can be found January through March. Yellowfin Tuna are year-round, however, the big ‘cow’ Tuna are landed in May and June.
August and September see the arrival of the huge female Black Marlin which can average in 500 lbs. Each season a few lucky anglers land a beauty that tips the scale past the 800lbs mark.
Dolphin (Dorado) are also caught year round, but most abundantly and oversized from October through to February.
