Pacific Sailfish in Panama

Sailfish are one of the most exciting billfish to target in Panama’s Pacific waters. Known locally as Pez Vela, Pacific Sailfish are fast, aggressive and spectacular fighters, making them a memorable catch from the Gulf of Chiriquí.

What Makes Sailfish Special?

Pacific Sailfish are instantly recognizable by their enormous dorsal fin, or “sail,” and elongated bill. They are built for speed and agility, with several remarkable adaptations that make them such exciting fish to encounter offshore.

  • Among the fastest fish in the sea: Their incredible speed allows them to rapidly pursue prey and make powerful runs once hooked.
  • A retractable sail: Their large dorsal fin can fold down into a groove along their back, reducing drag as they swim at speed. They can raise the sail to help make sharp turns and maneuver while hunting.
  • Aerial leaps: Sailfish are known for spectacular jumps, sometimes launching 10–20 feet out of the water while chasing prey or escaping predators.

How Big Do Sailfish Get?

There are two types of sailfish, the Pacific Sailfish and Atlantic Sailfish. In Panama, we have the Pacific Sailfish, which tend to be considerably larger than their Atlantic counterparts, with 100-plus-pound fish being relatively common in the Pacific waters off Panama. Their size, speed and powerful aerial fights make them one of the most impressive billfish to target in the Gulf of Chiriquí.

 

How We Fish for Sailfish

At Panama Nautical Club, we target sailfish alongside tuna, marlin and other offshore species using live bait and trolling. 

  • Live bait is a highly effective method when sailfish are spotted tailing or moving through offshore waters. Live bait can also produce sailfish while targeting tuna during offshore feeding activity.
  • Trolling is another proven technique, particularly as the dry season transitions into the wetter months. Our crew will adjust the approach based on water conditions, bait activity and where the fish are holding.

When Is the Best Time to Catch Sailfish in Panama?

Sailfish can be caught throughout the year, but April through August offers particularly good opportunities in the Gulf of Chiriquí. April and May are productive as the winds begin to ease, while July and August can be especially strong, as warmer water and increased rainfall bring favorable conditions for Pacific Sailfish.
